MODULE SELECTION

Module Selection Dates: To be confirmed soon

This page is intended to recap the main points of the module selection system, key module information and support you with module changes.

Feel free to read through this document provided by College Officer Ayesha Majeed.

A very BIG thank you to Ayesha for providing this!

We would highly recommend you read this document as it is the most up-to-date resource available and provides you with the exact selection process with computer screen shots.

Module Selection Main Points

  • It is no longer a first-come, first-serve basis, you have to now choose from blocks with a set of modules within each block

  • You will have 6-7 block that spans the whole year (so normally 3 or 4 blocks per term)

  • You will have to preferentially rank the modules in each block  from most to least wanted module

  • If one of the modules in a group is a core module for your pathway you will be ineligible for the remaining modules in that group

  • You are not compelled to rank each block, you must just satisfy the required amount of credits for your year

  • On your screen, you will have an indication as to how many credits you have left (especially important for students on pathways)

  • With the introduction of the ranking system it has been necessary to make some modules mutually exclusive, meaning that if one module in the group is assigned then this would make you ineligible for the other modules

  • The most coveted modules will be in the same block (eg: Immunopathology & Anatomical Sciences)

This template is only an example and not the actual version of the module selection page:

Module Selection

Points to Consider

  • Your Medical Science degree (core degree) requires you to take a minimum of 30 credits in Biosciences over your second and third (final) year.

  • Students on specific pathways (indicated below) will already have their core modules pre-allocated
    - Health Research
    - Human Genomics
    - Neuroscience
    - Pharmacology and Therapeutics

What Happens After Selection?

  • After the end of the selection window, student services staff will run student preferences through a custom algorithm

  • The focus of this algorithm is to maximize student satisfaction based upon student preference and the maximum number of student spaces available

  • This process will prioritize allocating students to their first choice module and so on, so please rank modules in order of preference

  • The algorithm will apply the same framework to all module choices to ensure the process is fair for all students

  • Students will receive an email from their hub with more information about ranking, so please make sure you follow this guidance closely

NB: When ranking modules please think carefully about your choices

The algorithm is unable to guarantee you will be allocated a certain number of credits in each term.

If you are unhappy with the selection you have been allocated regarding term structure you can undergo the Module Change process in July:
